I love the passage in Ephesians 3 that reads:
For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which pass knowledge: that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (vs 14-19).
Beautiful, just beautiful.
I’ve always taken this verse to mean that when we know the love of God, we find all the fullness of God. But today, as I’m traipsing my way through Ephesians, it suddenly hit me – whoa! This verse is about the body of Christ, not about just our individual walks with God!
Okay so Ephesians is all about how the Gentiles are welcomed into the Christian faith; there’s no more separation between Jew and Greek; all are one in Christ. And Eph. 1:23 says, “…which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” WHOA! His body is this fullness of Him who fills all in all?
So in this context, comes this gorgeous passage in Eph. 3, with this one little phrase I’ve always unknowingly skipped over. “that you…may be able to comprehend WITH ALL THE SAINTS…to know the love of Christ…that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
I mean, I’ve known it was important to be in relationship with other people, but man! We discover the fullness of God when together, as one, as the body of Christ, we have revelation of the love of God. Why would that bring us to His fullness? My guess is that only then do we live as Christ lived, when we are “rooted and grounded in love” (vs 17), when we “walk…with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (4:1-3). Wow!
That was just the coolest little discovery today. God fill me with Your fullness as I discover the depths of the love of God with my brothers and sisters, and as we learn how to live out of that love!
