When Dreams Seem a Long Time in Coming…

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11

This verse sits framed on a shelf in my kitchen — a constant reminder that God provides everything at the right time…even if it’s not my timing.

img_2055Before I go any further, let me tell you a few things about myself. My name is Kimmie and I am a coffee-obsessed, Jesus-loving wife and mother.

By day, you can find me working with companies to help them create training and development programs for their managers and employees. At night, I moonlight as an entertainer and comedy act for the cutest little boy on the planet.

My husband is a pretty awesome guy (if I do say so myself) and we live a normal, perfectly imperfect life together.

(Watch: To all the perfectionists…)

But I have a confession: I’m a control freak.

For as long as I can remember, I have been impatient, head-strong, and stubborn. I have all these goals, these hopes, these dreams. Stand down, people, I’ve got this! Well, God has a funny way of reminding me that I am not in control — He is.

Is there anyone else out there that feels like this reminder comes at the most inopportune times? I admit, I often find myself asking God, “How much longer do I have to wait?”

For the longest time, I was convinced that I would be married by 25 and that I would have all my children by the time I was 30. I would be a successful businesswoman with a great career and unlimited opportunities. I was looking for the American dream, complete with the house and the dog and the white picket fence. I was committed to this dream and I was determined to succeed all by myself.

(Watch: When waiting on God for your dreams to come true…)

Let me tell you a few things about Kimmie on the day she turned 25. She was broke, confused, and lost. She was dating a guy that she had no business being with. She had a terrible job and no prospects. So much for that dream, right?

Can I tell you a secret? She finally relinquished control and some pretty amazing things happened:

img_2108The man she would go on to marry reappeared in her life. She made new friends; one of which would help her get a new job. She and her husband had a little boy that they absolutely adore and they bought a house, complete with a white picket fence (okay, okay, it’s a black fence). The only piece missing was the dog. (Trust me, the dog can wait.)

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Every time I read that verse, I reflect on my journey. When I finally put God in the driver’s seat, things started falling into place. Did everything happen right away? No — and it drove me nuts. Sometimes, it still drives me nuts. But I put my trust in God because He knows me better than anyone else, even better than I know myself.

That is the beauty of a loving and generous God. He provides, He gives, and He blesses His children. Our dreams cannot compare to His plan.

(Read: The time in-between…that changes everything.)

So, I ask you to reflect on your own journey, your own story.

Have you put God in the driver’s seat? Or are you like 25-year-old Kimmie, trying to maintain control over your situation? I urge you to remember that God has a greater plan for you, a better plan than you can ever imagine. Let go of your inner control freak and let God in. Your dreams may seem a long way in coming, but praise Jesus — they are coming. Have faith and be strong.

She spends most of her days with her best friend & husband, Ryan, and their sweet little boy, Everett, playing with trucks and singing her best impressions of Elmo. When she’s not singing (off-key) and playing trucks, you can find her at Target, trying not to buy the whole store. Follow her on Instagram at @kplummahhh.
